Promoting Healthy Eating: Nutrition for 3rd Grade Everyone is affected by the food they eat—but the habits created during childhood are crucial and will affect the lifelong habits in the lives of our students which can affect their physical, mental, and lifelong habits. To do this, we must arm our students with knowledge on nutrition! Food affects the way we feel and helps fuel us to make good choices! The risk of poor nutrition includes an increased risk of high blood cholesterol, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. While the benefit of proper nutrition includes a healthier body and increased academic achievement. A great way for students to learn about nutrition is by having them record what they are eating!
Serving Sizes Students will be able to recognize how many servings can be found in a package of food. Students will be able to calculate what it means if there are two or more servings per container. I.e. If the size of the package is one cup, and is counted as two servings, one serving is a 1/2 cup.
Calorie Intake Students will learn what it means to balance calorie intake with calorie expenditure. I.e. “Eating too many calories per day is linked to overweight and obesity” (Symons, Pateman, & Seabert, pg. 164). Students will be able to recognize the calorie count on a package.
Nutrients Students will be able to recognize which nutrients they should be taking in. i.e. cholesterol vs. fiber Of these nutrients, students will be able to recognize how much of these nutrients they should be taking in.
