7D54 Human Traits

Background Some students look like one of their parents. Some look like a blend of both of their parents Some don’t look very much like either parent. What causes this variation in resemblance? You will look at 6 different characteristics such as eye color to study human variation. TRAITS = different versions of characteristics.

Procedure 1 On worksheet record eye colors in your group as blue, gray, green, brown, or hazel. Hazel eye are very light brown with yellow or green tones. If difficult, choose the closest color. Try to roll your tongue into a U-shape. Record who can and who can’t roll their tongue. Try to cross ALL the fingers of your writing hand. You may use your other hand to position them. Record who can and can’t.

Procedure 2 Record group heights in centimeters with a meter stick. Round to the nearest 5cm. Record arm spans in cm. Spread arms out and measure from fingertips. Round to 5cm. Get some PTC paper and record if you can taste it, and whether it is mild or strong. Check chin, earlobes, dimples, and freckles. Turn in your group worksheet with all names.

7D54 Human Traits Analysis For the characteristics, how many traits were in the class? i.e. If the class only had people with blue or brown eyes then write “eye color”, “blue & brown”, and “2” for 2 colors. Characteristics Traits Number of Traits Eye color Tongue rolling Finger crossing PTC tasting Heights Arm span Chin Earlobes Dimples Freckles
