Fig. 1 Schematic of an Excitatory Presynaptic Terminal Two glutamate gradients (extracellular to cytoplasmic and cytoplasmic to intravesicular) signified by shaded black triangles are depicted in an excitatory presynaptic terminal. Two distinct classes of glutamate transporters, EAATs (excitatory amino acid transporters, shown in blue) on the plasma membrane, and the recently identified BNP1/VGLUT1 (shown in red) on the vesicle membrane help set up and maintain these gradients.
