4-1

4-1 cont. Think about all the things that you do each day that require you to be able to read.  What are some of these things?  How would your daily life be negatively impacted if you didn’t know how to read?  How do you think other people would treat you if you couldn’t read? How did you learn to read?  Do you remember anything about the process?    How might your experience slightly connect to the experience of a person who is unable to read or write? How did you feel when you saw the warm‐up?  How did you feel when I expected you to be able to know what to do and told you that you would receive a zero if you couldn’t answer the question?

“Some things are fated to happen, and we have no control over them.”

4-3: Frederick Douglass Quote “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” What do you think this quote means? Do you agree? This coming from Frederick Douglass, does it have deeper meaning now that you know more about his life?

Journal 4-4: Ignorance It has often been said, “Ignorance is bliss,” and “What you don’t know won’t hurt you.” Do you agree with these statements? Why or why not?

Journal 4-5: Emmett Till Watch the video and write a response: http://www.biography.com/people/emmett-till-507515/videos/emmett-till-legacy- 109203523793

Journal 4-6: Speech Pretend you have been asked to give a speech about racism to a group of 1st graders. What would you say to them?

Journal 4-7: My Person Who is the most important person in your life? Why? What could you do to improve the relationship? Will you ever actually do it?
