Lesson Objectives To analyse the theme of power in Ozymandias. Lesson Outcomes AO1: Understand and explain the meaning and main themes of the poem. AO2: Analyse the language, form, and structure of the poem. AO3 : Link the poem to its social and historical background.

First Impressions We are going to watch a video Montague with the reading of the poem. What do the visuals from the clip tell us about the poem? Listen to the reading of the poem. Highlight the words on your poem where the reader emphasises the key words. Who do you consider to be the most powerful character in the poem? Can you identify the themes of power and conflict?

Key Words What are your impressions of Ozymandias as a ruler? Use some of the words below to annotate your poem (matching them to quotations already highlighted): fierce heartless intelligent remorseful proud loyal tyrant deceitful supportive loving vain brave sympathetic spiteful frightening regal

Extension Task Which of the four comments below best fit the poet’s point of view of the sculptor? Put the comments in order, starting with the one you agree with the most. Support your ideas with quotations. The sculptor was trying to flatter Ozymandias with the statue. The sculptor had great skill in making a piece of stone come to life The sculptor failed at their task as the statue is a ruin. The sculptor was almost mocking the arrogance of Ozymandias.
