Scales of Production Watch the video… Context: New topic on Scales of Production. What: Scales of Production is about how many of an item are made at one time. Why: All engineered products will be produced at a certain scale. Previously: You will have looked at some scales of production in KS3 D&T. Next: You are going to make some products at different scales. Watch the video… List the items that you see, how many of each of these items do you think are made in one go?  Fill out the charts… Item Number Made   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTWnQDAhp9k

To understand the scale of engineering production: one-off. Learning Objectives To understand the scale of engineering production: one-off. These issues affect all aspects of the course and should be considered throughout.

Learning Outcomes Progress – Identify what one-off production is. Good Progress –Identify some advantages and disadvantages of one-off production. Exceptional Progress –Describe one-off production to enable future comparisons.

One-off Batch Scales of Production Continuous Mass

One-Off Production One-off or individual production, is used to manufacture one-off products. It is often related to as “tailor made”, bespoke or customised solutions. A key feature is often a high-cost product that is manufactured to a client specification. This kind of one-off product may be higher cost due to more expensive materials and time consuming hand crafted production and finishing. Wedding dresses and custom made pieces use this type of manufacture. This is the most expensive type of manufacture. Highly skilled workers will be used, and will work on one job at a time. This means that it is extremely expensive.

One-Off Production Advantages Disadvantages High unit cost Low production efficiency Requires skilled labour High labour costs General tools and equipment Low initial investment

Production Scales: Key Words Characteristic Description Unit cost How much each item will cost. Tools and equipment What is used to make the item. Initial investment How much it costs to set up to make the item. Production efficiency How quickly and cheaply overall the product is to make. Labour type How much training do the people making the item need. Labour costs How much do the people making the item have to be paid.

Production Scales: Key Words Characteristic Description Examples Unit cost How much each item will cost. High cost item - expensive Medium cost item Low cost item - cheap Tools and equipment What is used to make the item. General tools - can be used to make other items Specialised tools - can only be used to make a few items Dedicated tools - can only be used to make one item Initial investment How much it costs to set up to make the item. High investment - expensive Medium investment Low investment - cheap Production efficiency How quickly and cheaply overall the product is to make. Low efficiency - is slow and expensive Medium efficiency High efficiency - is quick and cheap Labour type How much training do the people making the item need. Skilled - workers who have had lots of training Semi-skilled - workers who have had some training Unskilled - workers who have had no training Labour costs How much do the people making the item have to be paid.
