Applications of Timber Teaching Resource Applications of Timber teaching resource package provides an overview of timber applications in building. This resource covers a variety of topics and is suitable for inclusion in Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building courses at University level, and a large number of courses in the Building and construction streams at Trade Training level. The series of PowerPoint files can be downloaded and used in your classes. Go to www.education.WoodSolutions.com.au for up to date teaching resources.

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION WoodSolutions Teaching Resource CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION Basic Features Cladding can be fixed directly onto the timber framing thus offering an alternative to brick veneer construction. Associated advantages include: Lightweight construction - less footing construction. Easy to handle materials onsite. Cladding can be utilised as wall bracing. Cladding is more flexible to foundation movement than brickwork (i.e. less likely to suffer movement cracks from reactive soils). Particularly compatible with suspended timber floor construction.

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION Common Claddings – Reconstituted Weatherboards Made from timber fibres glued together. Boards available in packs of set lengths. Delivered “pre-primed” to improve board stability and minimise site painting. Utilise clips and jointing moulds to create hidden fixings and allow board movement.

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION Common Claddings – Sawn Weatherboards Typically ship-lapped or splayed-overlap to keep weather out’ Hidden nailing possible. Paint or stain finish needed for appearance/durability.

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION Common Claddings - Plywood Made from external grade treated plywood. Grooved externally to appear like vertical weatherboards. May be primer coated to improve board stability and reduce site painting. Sheets lapped at joints to maintain visual consistency and provide weatherproofing.

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION Common Claddings - Pre-painted sheet metal Sheets are similar in profile to roofing sheets. Available in standard widths but can be ordered to specific lengths. High quality factory applied paint finish.

CLADDING IN WALL CONSTRUCTION Common Claddings - Fibre cement sheet Fixed to the framework and used as a substrate with acrylic render. Sheets are made in the factory from cellulose fibre and cement. Sheet joints require special compound and reinforcing tape to set joints. Thin acrylic-based topping render makes the finished cladding appear like rendered masonry with a paint finish.
