Hi! I’m Cesar Chavez. Cesar Chavez helped many farm workers gain rights through nonviolent protests!

I am known for being diligent I am known for being diligent. As you learn more about my life, see if you can point out times that I show diligence. First, let’s take a look at what that word means!

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? The Chavez family had a small farm, and ran a country store. However, the Great Depression and years of drought forced thousands out of work. The Chavez family lost both their farm and store in 1937.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? This time of economic crisis became known as “The Great Depression.” Great Depression- economic crisis and mass unemployment which started in 1929.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? It was a dark time for the United States. People could not get jobs and families were suffering. Men stood in bread lines to get food. People lost their homes, and farmers lost their farms.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? When Cesar’s family lost their farm, they had to move to look for work wherever they could find it. His family traveled throughout the southwestern United States to work. They became migrant workers.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? A migrant worker is someone who moves to get work. Migrant farm workers move to pick crops when they are ready for harvest. It is hard work with low pay and poor working conditions.

Cesar spent most of his teenage years in Delano, California working on farms. In 1946, 17 year-old Cesar Chavez enlisted in the Navy. He stayed in the Navy for two years.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? After the navy, he returned to Delano and married his high school sweetheart, Helen Favela. They had seven children together. Helen became a huge supporter of Cesar and his efforts to help farm workers.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Helen and Cesar worked long hours in the fields picking grapes. Working conditions were poor. They had to work long hours. They also faced discrimination because of their race.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Discrimination is the unfair treatment of a person, racial group, or minority based on prejudice.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Sometimes water was not provided for them and there were no outhouses in the fields for them to use. If housing was provided for the workers it was substandard, usually without running water or indoor bathrooms.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? When the workers tried to form unions to get better conditions, the landowners would do everything they could to defeat them because they didn't want to pay the cost to make conditions better for the workers.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Cesar wanted to help farm workers receive higher pay and better working conditions. He became a full-time worker for the Community Service Organization (CSO) to try to improve conditions. He organized the workers.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Cesar left the CSO in order to organize the field workers himself into a union. He started a group called the United Farm Workers Association to help all farm workers.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Cesar followed the beliefs of fellow civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr., with his nonviolent protests. He did not use force when he organized protests.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? The Delano Grape Strike was the most important event in César Chávez's crusade. It started in 1965. A strike is a period of time when workers stop work in order to force an employer to agree to their demands.

During the strike, farmworkers walked 300 miles from Delano to Sacramento in a pilgrimage.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? The strike lasted for five years from 1965 to 1970. In 1967, striking farmworkers and supporters begin a national boycott of California grapes. A boycott is refusal to buy or use something.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? In the end, Cesar and the workers won and their demands were met. In 1988, Cesar went on a 36 day fast to protest the use of heavy pesticides used on the fields. The poisons were making the field workers sick.

EQ: Who was Cesar Chavez? Cesar died on April 23, 1993 in Arizona. He is remembered for fighting with diligence to increase pay and working to provide better working conditions for all farm workers. His funeral in Delano, CA was attended by 40,000 people.
