Chapter 6: Choose Words With Care By: Amber, Alex, and Brittney

4 keys to Effective word choice Avoid unnecessary adjectives and adverbs Use specific words Avoid technical words and jargon Choose words that sound natural

Pick the right word When using homophones you need to make sure you use the correct one. There, their, they’re Accept, except To, two, too

Weak and strong sentences Be specific Don’t use slang or jargon/ #, yolo, swag (etc.) Don’t be confusing Don’t use run-on sentences Make sure your grammar and punctuation is correct Use correct information

Make it simple Use average words Not too basic or too complex If you have to look it up, don’t use it Ex: acquaint (inform), adhere (stick), manifest (show)

Natural v.s unnatural Use words that sound natural Use precise words Ex: necessitate (require), modification (to change), per se (as such)

Wordy v.s concise Make sentences more simple Don’t use extra/ unneeded words Don’t use to many words Ex: in light of the fact that (since), in the event that (if), attach together (attach)
