Mostly Southern leaders Vote YES. Many notherners, including Abraham Lincoln, vote NO. (Sectionalism) *June, 1846—Bear Flag republic founded by Settlers in California, including some of Mexican background. The US army arrives to back them up and expel Mexican troops.

*February, 1847—General (future President)Zachary Taylor defeats 20,000 Mexican troops with only 5,000 men at The Battle of Buena Vista. Future leaders Robert E. Lee, future president U.S. Grant, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis are in his army. *February, 1847—General Winfield Scott lands at Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico with 8,500 men. *September, 1847—Scott and his men take Mexico City. *February, 1848—War ends with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico surrenders large area of what is now the Southwestern U.S.
