Welcome and Thank You! Today’s topics: What you’ll be doing How you can best help the students and the teachers What to do if the students are off task or not making ‘good choices’ Confidentiality Working With Children Check

Some beginning comments on junior classrooms today. Meeting individual needs A variety of activities ‘On task’ ‘Making good choices’ The value of an extra pair of adult hands, eyes and ears

What you’ll be doing: Working with small groups of students Being a ‘roamer’ Helping students change bookfolders Helping students with their writing.

How you can best help the students and the teachers: Always being positive and businesslike. Committing to a time Helping students do things for themselves Being ready to laugh Enjoying your time with us!

What to do if the students are off task or not making ‘good choices’: Some strategies Prevention Praise ‘I like the way you sat down straight away’. ‘You did a great job of taking turns’ Redirecting Firmly stating rules   Discipline is the teacher’s problem, not yours. Don’t ever be afraid to send a child to a teacher!

Confidentiality: The most important gift is trust. ‘what’s said in the classroom, stays in the classroom’. Keeping academic and social progress confidential including: any child’s progress lack of progress social difficulties special needs behavioural difficulties If you have any concerns, make these known to the teachers or principal.

Working With Children Check: Only adults who have a Working with Children check are permitted to work in the school. All teachers undergo a regular police check. Form from the post office, fill it in and send it off. When it comes back, the office will need a copy for our school records.

Any questions?
