Michelangelo

The new political leader hired Michelangelo to create a work that would symbolize the city of Florence. He decided to sculpt the young biblical hero, David, who defeated the giant Goliath with a sling shot. Michelangelo wanted his work to encourage the people of Florence in their struggle to be free of their enemies and the powerful Medici family who had controlled the city for so long. David represented human beings in all their beauty and glory. What did this say about his worldview? And how he viewed Florence and its future?

He was asked to paint the Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II in 1508, which expressed the religious worldview from the Old Testament at the time. Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel on scaffolding with extremely uncomfortable working conditions. The narrative begins at the altar and is divided into three sections. In the first three paintings, Michelangelo tells the story of The Creation of the Heavens and Earth; this is followed by The Creation of Adam and Eve and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden; finally is the story of Noah and the Great Flood.
