Ch.1-Wellness Lesson 1 7th Grade Mr. Royer

Wellness and Your Health Health is a condition of your physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. To be healthy, you must balance all of these parts.

Physical Health Physical health is the condition of the body. The following are suggestions to take care of the body and maintain physical health: E-Get 8 hours of sleep every night.(9-10hrs. for youngsters) Eat nutritious food and a balanced diet. Get plenty of Exercise or physical activity. Practice good hygiene- Hygiene is the practice of keeping clean and helps prevent the spread of disease. Avoid drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

THE EMOTIONAL PART OF HEALTH Your emotional health affects the way you see yourself and respond to others. Emotional health is the way you recognize and deal with your feelings.

Emotional Health To maintain your emotional health, try the following : Express your emotions in words rather than act them out. Show self –control, think before you act. Accept your strengths and weaknesses, and respect yourself. Deal with sadness appropriately and in a timely manner.

Emotional Health Changes during the teen years affect our emotional health. Added responsibilities at home and school as well as a changing body and new feelings affect our emotions. Experiencing these emotions is not always pleasant or easy, but it is normal. Talk to your parents or the school nurse or teachers .

Mental Part of Health Mental Health has to do with the mind and how you deal with life’s demands Being mentally healthy means that you can : Recognize and deal with stress in a positive way. Accept new ideas. Effectively solve problems. Your habits may also affect your mental health. For example: a poor diet and lack of sleep can leave you feeling depressed and worried as well as physically tired.

THE MENTAL PART OF HEALTH HW- What are the 3 main stressors in your life/ and in your parents life? What are some solutions?

THE SOCIAL PART OF HEALTH How well you get along and interact with other people is a sign of your social health Your family plays a large role in the support and development of your social health. Ways to improve your social skills are: Being considerate of others and their needs Showing respect to others Being dependable

Social Health-cont’d Supporting people when they make the right choices Expressing your true feelings Imagine putting yourself in another person’s place (how would you feel?) Ask for help when you need it Healthy connections with family , friends, and groups give you sense of belonging and help you feel good about yourself.

WELLNESS IS BALANCED HEALTH Wellness is the state of good health achieved by balancing your physical, mental, emotional, and social health. Maintaining a balance of the four parts will allow you to function at your best. One of the best ways to evaluate your health is to do a Health assessment- a set of questions that evaluates the four parts of your health. ( see p.7 in your book) Take the Wellness Quiz on the back of this paper.
