How can you reduce the impact of flooding? Do you know? UNIT 5 WEATHER

This is a levee. It keeps the water from leaving the lake too quickly and it controls where the water goes. A levee is made of dirt UNIT 5 WEATHER

A dam is made of concrete Dams work just like levees – they slow water down and direct where it goes A dam is made of concrete UNIT 5 WEATHER

Dams are a lot more expensive than levees, but they are stronger and they can also be used to make electricity. Do you know? UNIT 5 WEATHER

Some people in New Jersey think that the dunes will destroy their view of the ocean. But if they don’t have a dune then their houses might get washed away – and their neighbors might too. Is that OK? Flooding in New Jersey UNIT 5 WEATHER

The government is helping us to build higher, and stronger dunes at the beaches to protect our towns! When the next hurricane arrives the dunes will get destroyed, but some of our houses will be safer. Flooding in New Jersey UNIT 5 WEATHER

At the beach in NJ all new houses must be built on stilts! That way the water flows under them. That’s why the garage is always at the bottom of shore houses. (and also why the trash cans have fences around them.) Flooding in New Jersey UNIT 5 WEATHER

Building a stronger house. What can you do to make your house safer? Replace wooden doors and garage doors with metal doors. Replace your windows with shatter resistant, high impact windows. Building a stronger house. UNIT 5 WEATHER

Building a stronger house. What can you do to make your house safer? Install wind clips to keep the roof from blowing UP in a strong storm. Build on stilts. Building a stronger house. UNIT 5 WEATHER

Don’t mess with the dunes! Do not carve a path to the beach that is shorter than the rest of the dunes – it might be easier to walk over, but it’s easier for the water to get over too. Don’t walk on dune grass - you will kill the grass that holds the sand in place Landscape your beachside lawn with plants that have long, deep roots to keep the sand in place. Don’t mess with the dunes! UNIT 5 WEATHER

Severe wind can cause a lot of damage too. Do you know? UNIT 5 WEATHER

to learn more about wind. Read pages 140-141 to learn more about wind. Do you know? UNIT 5 WEATHER

Get together with your group to discuss this problem: You have just inherited this beach house in New Jersey. You have also been given some money to fix it up and make it safe. What are you going to do with this house to protect it and your family from the next hurricane? Remember that this house could be hit with winds of at least 74 miles per hour. That pieces of other houses will be blowing around and that floodwaters might be as deep as fifteen feet. UNIT 5 WEATHER
