CHAPTER 4.1 UNDERSTANDING STRESS

WHAT IS STRESS? QUESTION - STRESS- IS THE REACTION OF THE BODY AND MIND TO EVERYDAY CHALLENGES AND DEMANDS. EVERYONE EXPERIENCES STRESS- IT’S A NATURAL PART OF LIFE. QUESTION WHEN MIGHT YOU EXPERIENCE STRESS? LEARNING HOW TO MANAGE YOUR STRESS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF STAYING HEALTHY.

REACTING TO STRESS HOW A PERSON REACTS TO STRESS DOES EFFECT THEIR HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE.( POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE) POSITIVE EFFECTS – IT COULD MOTIVATE YOU TO DO YOUR BEST AND GIVE YOU ENERGY TO REACH YOUR GOALS. NEGATIVE EFFECTS- THIS COULD BE UNHEALTHY CAUSING A PERSON TO LOSE SLEEP OR BE WORRIED ABOUT AN UPCOMING EVENT THAT THEY DO POORLY AT.

WHAT CAUSES STRESS? - STRESSOR- IS ANYTHING THAT CAUSES STRESS. ( PEOPLE, OBJECTS PLACES, EVENTS AND SITUATIONS)

5 GENERAL CATEGORIES OF STRESS 1. BIOLOGICAL STRESSORS- ILLNESS, DISABILITIES, OR INJURIES. 2. ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS- POVERTY, POLLUTION, CROWDING, NOISE, OR NATURAL DISASTER 3. COGNITIVE OR THINKING STRESSORS- THE WAY YOU PERCIEVE A SITUATION.

GENERAL CATEGORIES OF STRESSORS 4. PERSONAL BEHAVIOR STRESSORS- NEGATIVE REACTIONS IN THE BODY AND MIND CAUSED BY TOBACCO, ALCOHOL, OR OTHER DRUGS AND LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. 5. LIFE SITUATION STRESSORS- DEATH, DIVORCE OF PARENTS, OR HAVING TROUBLE IN RELATIONSHIP.

3 STAGES OF STRESS RESPONSE ALARM STAGE ALARM STAGE- THIS IS WHEN THE BODY AND MIND GO ON HIGH ALERT. THE REACTION IN THIS STAGE IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE “FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE” THE BODY HAS TO PREPARE TO DEFEND ITSELF OR FLEE FROM THREAT. H

RESISTANCE STAGE 2. RESISTENCE STAGE-THIS IS WHEN THE BODY ADAPTS TO THE RUSH CREATED BY ALARM AND REACTS TO THE STRESSOR. THIS IS THE STAGE WHEN YOU FIGHT OR TAKE FLIGHT TO ESCAPE FROM DANGER. THIS IS ALSO WHEN THE BODY CAN BREIFLY PERFORM AT A HIGHER LEVEL OF ENDURANCE.

FATIGUE STAGE 3. FATIGUE STAGE- THIS IS WHEN EXPOSURE TO STRESS IS PROLONGED, AND THE BODY LOSES ITS ABILITY TO ADAPT TO THE SITUATION AND FATIGUE SETS IN. IN THIS STAGE BOTH MIND AND BODY BECOME EXHAUSTED.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR HEALTH -STRESS CAN SOMETIMES LEAD TO A PSYCHOSOMATIC RESPONSE. -THIS IS A PHYSICAL REACTION THAT RESULTS FROM STRESS RATHER THAN FROM AN INJURY OR ILLNESS. SOME HEALTH ISSUES THAT DEVELOP ARE: -HEADACHES-70 % ARE CAUSED FROM STRESS. -WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM- SICK MORE OFTEN -HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE -DIGESTIVE DISORDERS

QUESTION TICKET OUT THE DOOR! -THE HEALTH TRIANGLE CONSISTS OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL/EMOTIONAL, AND SOCIAL HEALTH. -NAME ONE WAY THAT STRESS EFFECTS EACH ELEMENT OF THE HEALTH TRIANGLE? TICKET OUT THE DOOR!
