Institute of Fundraising FICO Autumn Conference 2018 Working with High level Volunteers Eileen Hammond, FInstF

High level volunteers – what do we mean ? Patrons or Presidents No legal status or obligations Credibility and relevance to the charity Not all personalities make good Patrons or Presidents

Celebrities - what’s so special ? Credibility and stature Raise awareness and open doors Help with fundraising and campaigning An example people can follow Charities must use this relationship responsibly

What do you want them to do ? Consider the roles before making an approach Will they need to speak with authority ? Do they need relevant personal experience ? Is what you are asking appropriate for them ? Media attention – not increased income

Who would be right for you ? No personality will appeal to everyone Consider your target audience How would your existing supporters feel ? Find an appropriate match for your brand Will your vision be safe in their hands ? Where do you want to be positioned ?

How do you find them ? Who’s already out there ? Local charities - local personalities Recognise opportunities Make the links with activities Piggy-backing

Getting them on board Provide basic information Be pragmatic about their interest Explain how their involvement can help Inform about other personalities involved Be clear and truthful about your needs Unsolicited approaches seldom succeed Don’t depend on a speedy response

Managing the Relationship Who’s in control ? Agree expectations at the outset Confirm it in writing Agree expenses Make it comfortable and pleasurable Consider the problems and risks

Maintaining the Relationship Keep faith with the agreement Provide professional support Keep them informed Recognise their contribution Thank them Thank them again
