8th grade English Literature Review

“The Kid Nobody Could Handle” John Philip Sousa’s trumpet and Jim’s boots represent the prized possessions and identity of Jim and Helmholtz

“The Kid Nobody Could Handle” Helmholtz is a “rich man” because he loved his wife and job, not because he had a lot of money.

“Clean Sweep” Katie’s mom was forced to start a cleaning business because her husband died and she did not have insurance money.

“Clean Sweep” Katie was unhappy with her brother because he was a hypochondriac and he couldn’t or wouldn’t do his share of the work.

“All But My Life” Gerda was able to survive her imprisonment by Nazis by the memories of her family and her happy childhood home.

“All But My Life” One reason Gerda survived the Death March was because she obeyed her dad and wore ski boots on the day she was taken away.

“All But My Life” Gerda got her life back when she married the American soldier that liberated her from the Nazis. He was a German Jew whose parents had sent him to America.

“Woman in the Snow” Grady, the bus driver, is described as abused, overweight and racist.

“Woman in the Snow” The “Blackbird Express” is the name given the bus route that serviced black domestics.

“Woman in the Snow” “The gray coldness of Fear slipped into the driver’s seat…..Fear moved his foot to the gas pedal…” This is an example of personification.

The Diary of Anne Frank Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is the source of the play.

The Diary of Anne Frank The play is set in Amsterdam, Holland, during World War II.

The Diary of Anne Frank Plays are divided into acts.

The Diary of Anne Frank All Jews were required to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing. Their rations were cut when the suppliers of the ration books were arrested.

The Diary of Anne Frank The Franks went into hiding to hide from the Nazis. They were in hiding for 25 months. 8 inhabitants were in the secret annex when they were arrested.

The Diary of Anne Frank Mrs. Frank wants the Van Daans to leave because Mr. Van Daan was stealing food. They thought a warehouse worker had blackmailed them.

The Diary of Anne Frank The sounds of a burglar downstairs ruins the Hanukkah celebration.

The Diary of Anne Frank “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are basically good at heart.”-Anne “Aren’t they awful? Treating us as if we were still in the nursery.”-Anne

The Diary of Anne Frank “We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us.“ –Otto Frank “There are no walls, no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind.” -Otto Frank

The Diary of Anne Frank “In my day, it was the boys who called on the girls.” –Mrs. Van Daan “He’s no father to you. That man!” –Mrs. Frank “You must build your own character.” –Otto Frank

The Outsiders Narrator of the novel is Ponyboy. Members of Pony’s gang were Johnny, Dally, Steve, Darry, Soda, and Two-Bit.

The Outsiders Ponyboy is polite, soft-spoken, smart, and sensitive. Pony runs away when Darry slaps him.

The Outsiders Johnny and Ponyboy almost died when they rescued the children from the burning church.

The Outsiders Cherry helps Pony realize that not all Socs and Greasers are alike. “Things are rough all over.”-Cherry

The Outsiders Pony reacts to Johnny’s death by pretending Johnny wasn’t dead. By “Stay gold,” Johnny meant that Pony should stay sensitive and kind.

The Outsiders “Either way, there’s not going to be any blood feud between our outfit and Shepard’s. If we needed them tomorrow, they’d show.” -Two Bit

The Outsiders “I didn’t think! That’s all I hear out of you! Can’t you think of anything?” –Darry “I think I like it better when the old man’s hittin’ me. At least then I know he knows who I am.” –Johnny

The Outsiders “You know what a greaser is? White trash with long hair.” -Bob ”I mean, he loves you a lot. Savvy?” –Soda “It ain’t fair that we have all the rough breaks!” - Pony

The Outsiders S.E. Hinton was 16 when she wrote The Outsiders.
