f A LITTLE ABOUT ME This will be my 7th year to teach 1st grade at MES. I am from Huntingdon. I graduated from Huntingdon in 2004 and UTM in 2008. My husband, Clark, and I have been married for nearly 5 years. We have an almost 11 month old son named Tanner and a cat named Vega. I enjoy reading, decorating cakes, traveling, baking, and watching sports.

School begins at 7:45. Students will be tardy after 7:55. A typical 1st grade day Morning Work Reading/Grammar/Spelling Reading Centers Lunch (10:35-11:00) Math Math Centers Rotation Free Play Writing Snack/Pack up Dismissal Free breakfast is served daily from 7:15-7:45.

Please watch for…. Weekly newsletters sent home on Fridays with spelling words, stories, vocabulary words, and other information for the next week. Behavior Calendar sent home each day. Homework any day Monday-Thursday. Progress Reports the 3rd week of each 6 weeks Report Cards every 6 weeks

Example of the Weekly Newsletter:

Behavior Calendar It will be sent home in a sheet protector found in their Home Folder each day. Please check daily to see if your child moved their clip up or down. The circle will be colored to show where their clip was at the end of the day. If there is a number in the circle, it will tell you what action caused their clip to go down. I will write a brief explanation if needed in the box. Please write your initials in each day’s box to let me know you have seen it!

Homework Homework will be sent home possibly any night Monday-Thursday. Their Reading book will come home every night, except Friday, for them to read the stories. They will also need to practice spelling words each night. Any homework will be stamped HOMEWORK, and I will check for it to be returned each morning.

GRADES First graders will receive grades in: Reading: Oral Reading and Vocabulary/Comprehension Tests on Friday Math: Chapter Tests (there will be two grades each time) Spelling: Tests every Friday Conduct: S, N, and U are given based on # of color changes per 6 weeks. **An N or U will keep them from being on the Honor of Merit Roll for that 6 weeks. In order to meet state standards, both reading and math must be passed in order to be promoted to 2nd grade. Grading Scale 93-100 A 85-92 B 75-84 C 70-74 D Below 70 F S satisfactory N needs improvement U unsatisfactory

Classroom fees/Supplies There is a $5 classroom fee for the notebook paper and a writing dictionary we will use throughout the year. -You can pay with cash or write a check to McKenzie Elementary School and put it in the envelope I have given you. You have a detailed supply list in your folder. Please remember a soft pencil bag (not a box), wooden pencils (no mechanical pencils please), and folders with the fasteners in them, if possible.

Our Rotation Schedule Monday – Computer Tuesday – P.E. Wednesday – Music Thursday – Library Friday – P.E.

Lunch Snack Our lunch is from 10:35-11:00. You may come eat lunch with your child. You can eat at the back table with your child only (no friend). Sign in at the office and meet us by the cafeteria door. Snack *You may also send a snack with your child for them to eat at the end of the day.

Change of Destination Please send a written note if your child will have a change of destination. If there is an emergency, call the office and notify them. If I do not receive a note (or a fax in the office), they will go home their normal way.

Car Riders There is a sign in your child’s folder with their name on it. Please put it your car and make sure it is visible for the teachers to see when you pick up your child. **This one is temporary; we will send a new permanent one on green paper the 2nd week of school. You must have the sign with you in the vehicle for us to let your child come to you. If there isn’t a sign, you will have to come inside to sign them out.

Birthdays If you want to send invitations for a party outside of school, please make sure there is one for every student. Due to many children having food allergies, we are discouraging sending snacks for birthdays. Thanks for understanding!

Additional misc. info All student medication must be brought to school by an adult. You may talk with our school nurse with any medication concerns. We will be performing safety drills during the first few weeks of school ~ fire, tornado, earthquake, and intruder If you would like to volunteer at school, please pick up a “Volunteer Packet” from the PTO table at the front of the school. If you are interested in after-school YMCA, Ms. Cathy has information by the front door.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE TONIGHT…. I need these 2 things: 1. Transportation sheet about the first day of school and days after. Information sheet You may look over the other papers in your folder and send them to school with your child on Monday or a.s.a.p.
