Enforcing Mercantilism The Colonial Economy: Mercantilism Beginning around 1650, the British government pursued a policy of mercantilism in international trade. Mercantilism created a trade system whereby Americans provided _________________to Britain, and Britain used the raw materials to produce manufactured goods that were sold in European markets and back to the colonies. As suppliers of raw materials only, the colonies could not compete with Britain in manufacturing. English ships and merchants were always favored, excluding other countries from sharing in the British Empire’s wealth. Directions. Below is mind map of the various acts, laws, and events that unraveled as a result of the policy of mercantilism. As England began to pass more laws to protect trade, the colonies will chose to rebel, revolt, protest, and boycott those laws. The first bubble is the name of the law OR event. In the second bubble, describe what the law/event is. In the third bubble, describe how the colonies will respond. In the fourth bubble, describe how England will respond to the colonies. Quartering Act Navigation Acts 105 Tea Act 118 Enforcing Mercantilism Intolerable Acts 119 Townshend Act 115 Stamp Act 114-115 Sugar Act 113-114
