Video of the Day Pearl Harbor

The United States Enters the War Britain, Russia and the US agreed that defeating Germany was the number one priority for the allies.

The Strategy Japan would just be contained until Germany was defeated.

The Strategy Reasons to contain Japan until Germany defeated: Germany more of an immediate threat Industrial ability more feared In war over 2 years and needed relief Allies wouldn’t be able to put max effort in both Europe and Pacific

Japanese Territorial Strategy Japan needed to expand her territory to gain raw materials to become an industrial nation.

Japanese Territorial Strategy After Japan moved into Manchuria and China in 1939, the US and Britain embargoed all trade with Japan.

Japanese Territorial Strategy Rather than give up on expansion, Japan chose to fight.

Japanese Territorial Strategy Japanese strategy: Capture East Indies Philippines New Guinea Marshall, Caroline & Mariana islands Use as defense perimeter, fortify and build air bases

Japanese Territorial Strategy Two weaknesses with strategy: Japan needed to import large quantities of raw materials – needed safe passage of shipping Naval fleet would be spread over 6 million sq mi – needed to destroy US Pacific fleet

Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The primary purpose was to cripple the American Fleet at Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor Japan’s needed to gain air superiority to attack Fleet with little or no interference. Plan was to eliminate force by surprise attacks while aircraft was on the ground.

Pearl Harbor The attack was a complete surprise and the losses were staggering. Japanese destroyed: 96 Army / 96 Navy and damaged 159 aircraft Only 6 Army fighters and 36 Navy aircraft got in the air

Pearl Harbor The US suffered heavy losses in ships, airplanes, and personnel. Navy: 8 battleships lost or damaged 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers Personnel: Navy & Marine Corps 2,117 killed 960 missing and 876 wounded Army / Army Air Force 226 killed 396 wounded Japan lost 28 planes & 64 men

Pearl Harbor Only bright spot Japan failed to destroy US aircraft carriers The carriers were out on maneuvers not present at time of the attack.

Pearl Harbor Dec 8, 1941 US declared war on Japan Dec 11, 1941 US declared war on Germany & Italy England and the other Allies also declared war on Japan Now all the major powers were engaged in total world war
