IMPERIALISM (IN CHINA, JAPAN, AND THE MIDDLE EAST) TEST November 21, 2016 Global II Agenda: DO NOW: Multiple Choice Review NOTES #19: How did imperialism affect the Middle East? IMPERIALISM (IN CHINA, JAPAN, AND THE MIDDLE EAST) TEST TOMORROW

How did imperialism affect the Middle East? Notes #19

Beginning in the 1800s, European nations became interested in the Middle East because of the large amount of oil reserves located there. = million barrels per day 

Two areas of particular interest were Egypt and Palestine.

Both France and Britain were interested in controlling Egypt because it had a strategic location.

Suez Canal statistics: 120.11 miles long, In 1859, France began building the Suez Canal in Egypt to increase trade between Europe and the Middle East. Suez Canal statistics: 120.11 miles long, 79 feet deep, 673 feet wide

Britain eventually took control of the Suez Canal away from France in 1875 and took control of Egypt in 1882 (until 1956).

In 1920, Britain took control of Palestine because it had a strategic location.

Britain eventually gave up control of Palestine (in 1948) because conflicts between the people living in Palestine made the area too difficult to govern.
