The BNA Act The Aboriginal peoples were not consulted at Confederation in 1867 The BNA Act, which was Canada’s original constitution did not acknowledge the rights of Aboriginal peoples

How did the BNA Act affect the Aboriginal People of Canada? Made First Nations the responsibility of the government. Did not acknowledge First Nations as sovereign peoples with their own form of government Did not mention Inuit or Metis at all

Reporters Role Media influence our personal understanding of the world and how it works. Media interpret facts and make choices to tell the story. The more the story is repeated in the media the more it affects us as Canadians

Role of the Media According to Mr. Martin on page 47 what is the role of the media? What is the role of the government? What are the difficulties of trying to report the news concerning the government?

How does the government control the media? Politicians develop stories and messages for the media This is done to control how the media presents the story Allows politicians to communicate what they want Canadians to know These messages are like slogans

Detecting Bias Read the news story on page 49. The same story is also on handout 1-12. Using the handout, in pairs use the questions on page 49 to analyze the story and detect any bias’ that might be evident in the article. Dissect and analyze the information by highlighting, circling, or underlining key terms and phrases. After step 3 answer the questions on the second page of handout 1-12.
