college of their choice College Preparation Program designed to assist 9-12 th grade students graduate from high school and attend the college of their choice. Participation is year round UB serves 50 students from 4 high schools Oceanside, El Camino, Escondido, Orange Glen

Academic Advising After school tutoring College Saturdays Community Service Cultural Activities Academic Component Summer Component 3 week residential at CSUSM Academic curriculum o Reading/Language Arts, Math, Science, Computers, Foreign Language Cultural & Social Activities Career/College Exploration Leadership Development A week long college tour

One on one meeting with student and parent(s) once per semester to review: A-G Requirements Grades Academic Goals Participation in UB

How often? 4 hours per week at your high school or the UB Office Why? Complete homework Receive help with school work Develop good study habits Who are the tutors? CSUSM college students who specialize in areas such as math, science, English, history etc…

How often? 6 Saturdays per semester Why? Improve academic skills in Reading/Language Arts & Math Prepare for college entrance exams (SAT or ACT) For seniors to work on college applications, FAFSA, scholarships etc… How do I get there? UB provides a school bus that picks up at each high school

Why? An opportunity for our students to give back Looks great on college applications Beneficial when completing scholarship applications Examples of past community service projects Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Walk Oceanside Beach clean-up Cardiovascular Disease Foundation

Why? To develop well-rounded students Cultural Events What kind of Cultural Events? Broadway musicals, Plays, Museums Motivational Activities What kind of Motivational Activities? Professional sporting events Bowling, Movies, Amusement Parks

Why? To give an in-depth orientation to incoming freshman Teach and review college admission requirements Begin meeting other UB students Where? Cal State San Marcos How Long? 4 days (July 20-23)

Why? Enrich academic skills in a college setting Have first-hand college experience Enhance personal growth Where? Cal State San Marcos University Village (on-campus housing) What does it involve? Daily academic classes, Recreational Activities, Leadership Development, Social Activities How Long? 3 weeks (students and staff go home every Thursday and return on Sundays)

Students who are: US Citizens or Permanent Residents (must have a Social Security Card) Meets one or both of the following: First-generation college bound First-generation college bound (neither parent has completed a 4-year college degree) low-income guidelines Family meets Federal low-income guidelines Must be in 8 th grade and planning to attend: Oceanside El Camino Escondido Orange Glen

Students possessing these characteristics: Academic Need Academic Discipline Motivation Sense of Commitment Appreciation of cultural diversity

Complete an application packet Requires 2 letters of recommendation 1-2 page essay Middle school transcripts &Test Scores* First 2 pages of Tax Return (1040 or 1040A) or W2s* Copy of Social Security Card* Attend parent/student interview Each accepted student will complete a 1 year probationary period (or as determined by the Associate Director) *All personal information is kept confidential by UB Staff

Why the long recruitment process? UB needs to know that you are COMMITTED! When should I turn in my application? As soon as possible (Applications are due by April 30, 2010) Where do I turn in my application? To your teacher How long will I be in the program? All 4 years of high school
