Statistical Profile Of Engineering Chapter 4 Tom Rebold,

Fig 4.1 Engineering Enrollments

Fig 4.2 & 4.3

What does an Engineer do with all that? Ask questions of the data— How has Engineering enrollment changed relative to the number of available students? What factors are behind the trends in the curves? What is likely to be the future enrollment? Will we have enough Engineers in the future? More importantly…will I be able to find work as an engineer?

College Enrollment Trends Notice that Fig 4.1 & 4.2 are basically 18 yrs “out of phase” The Time scales between them Use Statistical tools to Reveal Trends 1st Yr Engr Students vs. 18 yr olds 1st Yr Engr Students vs. Hi-School Grads

from the NACE 2008 report… New Data Show Strong Labor Market for Scientists and Engineers" National Science Foundation (04/03/08)Newly published studies by the National Science Foundation (NSF) show that contrary to highly publicized reports, the engineer and scientist pipeline in the United States is robust, along with demand for their skills. Data show that the number of workers in the science and engineering (S&E) occupations increased by 4.3 percent in 2006, while their unemployment rate fell to 2.5 percent, the lowest unemployment rate for such workers since the early 1990s; the overall unemployment rate in the United States in 2006 was 4.7 percent. "The current S&E labor force is expanding, new graduates are coming out, and people are able to find employment, or are continuing their education," says Nimmi Kannankutty, the NSF program manager responsible for compiling the data.

NACE Research: Top-Paid Majors For 2007-08 Graduates the overall average starting salary offer for Winter 2008 ($49,300) is 4 percent greater than the average salary offer in Winter 2007 ($47,414)—right in line with the salary increase employers predicted.
