How does the government help people during an economic crisis? QUESTION OF THE DAY? How does the government help people during an economic crisis?

FDR & NEW DEAL A TIME FOR CHANGE! Essential Question: How did the New Deal programs provide relief for Americans? Recovery for the economy? Reform to the economy and society?

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE NATION? FDR Elected President in November 1932 Takes office March 4, 1933 By March there were 13,000,000 unemployed, and almost every bank was closed.

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT HOPE FOR NEW NATION Assuming Presidency at depth of Great Depression. Helping American people regain faith in themselves

HOW DID FDR HELP AMERICANS REGAIN FAITH? LET'S MAKE A GUESS...

FDR’S FIRESIDE CHATS BROUGHT RENEWED HOPE! ”The success of our whole national program depends, of course, on the cooperation of the public-on its intelligent support and its use of a reliable system”.

FDR’S PLAN FOR REFORM KEYNESIAN ECONOMICS: http://www.msnbc.com/the-last-word/watch/fdrs-evolution-of-thinking-on-keynesian-economics-42212419682 KEYNESIAN ECONOMICS: Keynesian or "pump priming" economics. It held that money should be invested in the people, the working class. Deficit Spending,Deficit spending is when purchases exceed income. Deficit spending in 1933-1934, federal revenues were $3.1 billion, spending $7.1 billion, “recovery and relief” Start from the beginning and stop at 1:58

FDR'S NEW DEAL THE NEW DEAL WAS A SERIES OF PROGRAMS INTRODUCED DURING THE GREAT Depression

RELIEF: Giving Direct Aid To Reduce The Suffering Of The Poor An example of A PWA PROJECT Lincoln Tunnel An example OF a RELIEF Program: Public works Administration PROJECT PWA: Awarded contracts for heavy construction projects The PWA was allotted $3.3 billion to be spent Between 1933 and 1939 the PWA built 35% of the nation's schools and 70% of its hospitals

RELIEF PROGRAMS Continued: Civilian Conservation Corps: Public Work Program employed young men 18-25 to contribute to the conservation of the nations natural resources Those working for the CCC were paid a dollar a day, with $25.00 per month sent home to their dependents, alleviating poverty at home. CCC Project Great Smoky Mountains National Park

RECOVERY:Creating jobs and helping businesses grow by restarting the flow of consumer demand Example of Recovery program: National Recovery Administration: Purpose was to address the crisis in industry by suspending the antitrust law and allowed the government business, and labor to work together

Recovery programs Continued: Agricultural Adjustment Act: Purpose of the legislation was to provide relief for farmers and other agricultural workers during the Great Depression. Over 6 million hogs and sows were slaughtered in the AAA's effort to raise prices, at a cost of over $30,000,000.

REFORM: Of the financial system to ease the economic crisis and introducing permanent programs to avoid another depression and insuring against future economic disasters Tennessee Valley Authority:The purpose of the TVA to address a wide range of economic, environmental and technological issues, including the management of natural resources and the delivery of low-cost electricity Each dam building project employed up to 40,000 workers

Reform Programs Continued: FDIC:The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insured depositors against the loss if their bank should collapse. No depositor has ever lost a cent of insured deposits since the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) was created in 1933.

Controversy Strikes FDR Court Packing Controversy The Supreme Court had declared the National Industrial Recovery Act and the Agricultural Adjustment Act unconstitutional The purpose of court-packing plan was allegedly to increase the Court’s efficiency FDR wanted to use the plan to appoint justices who would not block his administration’s New Deal programs.

How will FDR Respond to this controversy? Based on the Image what do you think happens?

Second NEW DEAL After having fixed most of the problems throughout the New Deal I am working towards a new plan, the Second New Deal, which is aimed to solve all of the remaining problems that will affect Americans in the long term

Second New Deal Programs WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION (WPA)- COMBATTED UNEMPLOYMENT BY PROVIDING LIGHT CONSTRUCTION JOBS The result of the WPA was to provide employment for 25% of the population, between 1935 and 1939 The WPA was the nation's biggest employer.

Second New Deal Programs Continued SOCIAL SECURITY ACT: National pension fund for unemployment, public assistance program for dependent mothers and disabled people and monthly retirement benefit people could collect at 65. First person to receive monthly retirement benefits got it January 31, 1940,for the amount of $22.54
