Family and Consumer Sciencies Education (FCS) (Staff Member Introduces presenter to present and gives a segway for this.) “Skills for Living and Earning a Living”

FCS Mission “To prepare students for living and earning a living through consumer and family studies and eight Family and Consumer Sciences Related Occupations Career Pathways” (read)

What is FCS? 3 Interrelated Programs FCSRO CFS FCCLA HECT is three interrelated programs (list them defining what each acronym means) CFS: Consumer and Family Studies HERO: Home Economics Related Occupations FHA-HERO: Co-curricular student leadership organization that ties the two programs together. This is not “in addition” to what you do in the classroom; you can fold many of the components into your classroom curriculum.

FCS Community Approximately 145,000 student participants 60% female 1,200 programs in middle, junior and senior high schools and ROCPs 700+ teachers These statistics give you a quick overview of our programs statewide.

FCS Program - Viable, Dynamic, Relevant Standards-based instruction Hands-on instruction Authentic assessment Articulated, sequenced instruction from grades 6 - 16 Business and industry partnerships Our programs are standards-based; that is the big reason you are here today. The details of these standards will look familiar to you if you have been teaching in this area for a while. They are not new—they are just formatted differently. If you are new to the profession or have been around a while, you will become familiar with these and how to use them today. Our programs are known for getting kids involved in activities on several levels including hands-on instruction. Along with this, we use authentic assessment that is tied to “real life” or industry needs. We have programs articulated through middle school, high school, community colleges and four year colleges. This has been termed “2+4+2+2”. Through working with advisory committees and community partnerships, we partner with businesses in our areas.

FCS Program - Priorities and Issues Economic development Family and societal stability Leadership development Worker productivity We prepare students for Careers in industry associated with each of our career pathways. To assume roles in family and society Through classroom activities and FHA-HERO, we teach leadership skills and their application to home life and work life.

FCCLA: The California Affiliate of FCCLA A dynamic pre-professional leadership organization Co-curricular activities based on FCS content A “showcase” for FCS programs and teachers Venue for developing leadership skills Instructional strategy that makes learning more relevant FHA-HERO is meant to be co-curricular and taught within the courses you teach; some schools chapters meet outside of the classroom. (read slide) FHA-HERO is tied to the national organization, FCCLA.

FCS means: A better life… A better career… A better future. As a classroom teacher it is important for our students to recognize the broadness of our HECT programs and to understand that this program is statewide and is similar in California middle schools and high schools. As presenters we thought it would be important to provide you a shortened power point on What is HECT? and a handout that will assist you in teaching this to your students. Included is a copy of the slides and the handout for you to view.
