Your society may consist of the community you live in, your school, and your ethnic or religious group, as well as other groups. Societies have sets of values and expectations that they impose on their members. 2

Different Societies, Different Values Each person must work out a relationship with society that is rewarding. 3

Different Societies, Different Values People whose values differ from society’s values may experience alienation and ostracism. alienation Withdrawing from others because of differences that cannot be resolved ostracism Rejection and exclusion from society

Different Societies, Different Values A person who doesn’t fit in with the majority is a nonconformist. nonconformist A person who does not share society’s values and therefore behaves in unconventional ways

Different Societies, Different Values Finding a Career Finding a career is an important part of fitting into society. To find a career that you will enjoy, become a volunteer in a variety of areas to find a place you feel comfortable.
