Wednesday 5/2/18 Notebook Entry: Outside Lima, Peru sits Chankillo ruins. The site is 2,300 years old and includes a temple, a plaza, and thirteen towers constructed from cut stone. Recent excavations indicated that Chankillo was occupied for a relatively short period of time between the mid- fourth century B.C. and the early first century A.D. but was subsequently abandoned, most likely due to violent conflict. Why do you think this ancient culture built the 13 towers?

Wednesday 5/2/18 Notebook Entry: Examine the photo that someone took of the sunrise. What would you say is the direction of the sunrise? Use the diagram of the sky to help you.

Rotate Vs. Revolve Revolution = movement of one object around another object Orbit = the path of an object as it revolves around another object in space. Earth rotates and revolves. How are these two things different?

Apparent Motion Motion that seems real, but is really due to the fact that the observer is moving. Objects in the sky appear to move from East to West because Earth turns from West to East Time Lapse Video of Night Sky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTvvQ65jWVs

Thursday 5/3/18 Notebook Entry: The graphic below shows an example of temperature change throughout the day. The example is from a typical spring day in Helena. What is causing the temperature to rise during the day? Why does the temperature start to decrease after 7pm?

Patterns in Sunrise and Sunset? Goal: Identify patterns in sunrise and sunset using the online simulation “Motions of the Sun” Task: Work with your partner to manipulate the animation and answer the questions in Part 1 of the investigation. We will discuss part 1 at _______________________.

Ahrens (2015), clarifies this phenomenon by comparing the Sun in June, which rises in the northeast, rises to a higher position in the sky at noon and sets in the northwest to the sun in December, which rises in the southeast, rises to a lower position in the sky at noon and sets in the southwest, thus following a shorter apparent path. Middle school students are familiar with calculations of speed: speed = distance ÷ time If the apparent speed of the sun across the sky doesn’t change, but the time it takes to traverse the apparent path does, then the distance must change as well. Hence, a logical response is that the Sun follows a shorter apparent path across the sky in December than it does in June (see figure below). Students can model and verify this with the “Motions of the Sun” simulator.

Patterns in Sunrise and Sunset? Goal: Identify patterns in sunrise and sunset using the online simulation “Seasons and Ecliptic” Task: Work with your partner to manipulate the animation and answer the questions in Part 2 of the investigation. We will discuss part 2 at _______________________.

Monday 5/7/18 Fill out your assignment notebook for the week. Notebook Entry: When we are experiencing winter, what season do you think it is in Central Chile?

Describe how your solar panels will move through the day. Suppose you want to “go green” by installing solar panels that will be super efficient. You design and program your panels to follow the sun. Describe how your solar panels will move through the day. Will you adjust the daily movement through the year? Explain. Solar Panel Pre-Assessment Question

Partner Whiteboards Draw on the whiteboard a diagram of Earth, Sun and the Earth’s orbit path. Show the location of the Earth on it’s orbit when we are experiencing summer, fall, winter, and spring. Label each position.
