Atom Exploration

You will be investigating the structure of an atom and creating a model to represent what you have learned about the structure of an atom. What are we doing?

Because in order to learn and understand about EVERYTHING else on Earth we have to understand the smallest structure that everything is made from. Why are we doing it?

Answer the question below in your journal…yes you have to write it. What are the building blocks of matter?

1. What are the major parts of an atom? Then using this website determine what the major parts of an atom are and define them. Create a 2-D model within your journal. 1. What are the major parts of an atom?

Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the 3 parts of an atom Proton Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the 3 parts of an atom Neutron Electron

Atoms and the Periodic Table How does the periodic table help us know the number of each part of an atom? Draw the Oxygen box in your journal and label the parts (ATOMIC NUMBER, ATOMIC MASS, ATOMIC SYMBOL, CHEMICAL NAME). Go to the self check station to check your work before you move on. Atoms and the Periodic Table

A group of atoms form a ____________________________. Research common molecules.

You are now to create your own model of an atom You are now to create your own model of an atom. You know the basic structures of an atom: the electron, the neutron, and the proton. You also know how to determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons from the periodic table. First, you must select an element from the first 10 elements! Then working with your group create a model of this elements model. Items that must be included: Model itself (can be 2-D or 3-D) Labels of the parts of an atom and provide a definition Your element’s square on the period table. Provide an explanation as of to how to determine how the model would look, the number of atoms parts etc. Design Challenge
