Beyond Dominant & Recessive Alleles
Genetics and Heredity Part III Every path has its puddle. English proverb.
Hair Color What is going on here? Polygenic vs. Multiple Alleles Multiple Alleles: Blood Type Phenotype- A, B, AB, O blood type Alleles I A I B I O ONE.
Punnett Squares Step by step how to guide. Putting it together Alleles represented by letters –Capital letters = dominant (T) –Lowercase letters = recessive.
Can you predict what offspring will look like? PUNNETT SQUARES.

11-3 Exploring Mendelian Genetics
Genetics Chapter 11. Gregor Mendel  “Father” of genetics  Austrian monk, mid-1800s  Researched pea plant inheritance –Easy to grow, fast reproduction.
 Genes are found on the X AND Y chromosomes.  Genes that are carried on the sex chromosomes are called sex linked genes.

GENETICS The study of Heredity!. Heredity- Deals with inherited traits Traits- Inherited characteristics (ex. Eye color) –Our DNA determines our traits.
Codominance "co-" is "together".  Refers to a relationship between two alleles of a gene. Both traits appear in an organism. They do not overpower each.

There is no dominant allele, There is no recessive allele. Both alleles “blend” to result in a third phenotype.

Incomplete or Co-Dominant?!?!. Normally traits have one dominant allele and one recessive allele…. What happens when an allele for a trait isn’t completely.
Exceptions to Mendel’s Laws: Co-dominance Incomplete Dominance Multiple Alleles.
Say What!?!?. One allele is not completely dominant over the other. - heterozygous phenotype always intermediate Ex. A cross between a recessive white.
Polygenic (“many genes”) traits – controlled by more 2 or more genes. This is the case for most traits! – produce a wide range of phenotypes. Ex: Skin.

Presentation transcript:

Multiple Genes Much like dihybrid, but more capital letter alleles contribute to more of the specific trait Ex. Four dominant genes produce very dark red kernels. Three dominant genes produce dark red kernels. Two dominant genes produce red kernels. One dominant gene produces light red kernels. A lack of any dominant genes would be albino

Multiple Genes RrSs = rrSs = RRss = Rrss = RrSS = RRSS = Red Light Red Very Dark Red Dark Red

Multiple Genes Cross medium wheat (RrSs) with dark red wheat (RrSS).
