DBQ’s Do’s and Don’ts DO’S DON’TS Read carefully and make sure you understand the questions you are being asked Quickly jot down the major themes/events/people you associate with the topic/questions Read over the documents and make notes DON’TS Respond to a question that isn’t asked Use “I” statements such as “I think that Doc A portrays” Summarize a document, the reader knows the content and is interested in how you view the document relating to the question

DBQ’s Do’s and Don’ts DO’S DON’TS Write out preliminary thesis and outline of your major points Include your own analysis/perspective on the question Keep an eye on the timer so you can have time to re-read your essay to fix any errors BE SPECIFIC DON’TS Quote long passages from the documents – use an ellipsis “…” if you need to Spend so much time reading and underlining that you rush to your writing

Roman Republic

Geography Rome is located on the peninsula of Italy. The Mediterranean Sea provides transportation and food. Italy provides fertile plains and river valleys for food and easy communication. How does this geography compare to Greece? Does it seem easier or more difficult to unite? Why would the location of Rome be beneficial in the creation of a civilization/empire? Why would this location force Rome to have a strong military?

The Roman Republic Rome was founded around 509 BCE. Romans founded a new type of government called a republic. In a republic people chose officials to represent them. The highest form of government in Rome was the Senate. Senators were wealthy landowners (called Patricians.) Why a republic? They believed this would prevent any individual from gaining too much power --- How does this differ from Greek democracy? Originally there were only 300 members – they made laws for the public to follow

The Roman Republic Cont… The senators elected two Consuls, their jobs were to run the government and command the army. They could only serve 1 term – consuls had to agree – essentially the beginning of checks and balances – also preventing too much power

Society was Divided Into Classes Upper class Romans were known as patricians. These people held nearly all the important political offices. Common framers, artisans, and merchants were known as plebeians. These two classes were based on birth alone. The line between the two classes was extremely rigid. Plebians had minimal influence in the government – they did try to make effort in politics, they did this by gaining the right to their own officials called tribunes – they were able to veto laws that they felt were not beneficial for the group

Roman Society Roman families were headed by the eldest male. The Romans emphasized discipline, strength, and loyalty. Women had many rights and duties in Roman society. She did not, however have the key right, the right to vote. Officially, the Roman women were expected to remain in the background. The eldest male enforced discipline and total respect Roman women had more roles in society than Greek women Both girls and boys from upper classes learned to read and write

Roman Religious Ideals Romans were polytheistic, believing in many gods and spirits. Knowledge of the Greek Gods filtered into Roman culture. This is known as cultural diffusion. The Greek God Zeus became the almighty Roman God Jupiter. The Greek Goddess Hera became the Roman Goddess Juno.
