Protected areas – protected species? Michael Gross  Current Biology  Volume 22, Issue 9, Pages R287-R289 (May 2012) DOI: 10.1016/j.cub.2012.04.032 Copyright © 2012 Terms and Conditions

Wild life: The elusive fosa (Cryptoprocta ferox) is the top predator in the dry deciduous forests of Madagascar, but very little was known about its biology until the 1990s. The presence of volunteer groups studying its role in the forest's ecology has also helped to protect its habitat. (Photo: Earthwatch/ Luke Dollar.) Taking measures: A volunteer measures the shell of a queen conch (Lobatus gigas) in order to estimate its age. (Photo: Earthwatch/Ryan Cox.) Current Biology 2012 22, R287-R289DOI: (10.1016/j.cub.2012.04.032) Copyright © 2012 Terms and Conditions

Bee alarm: An elephant is startled by recordings of buzzing bees played by researchers exploring the possibility of using beehives to keep the pachyderms away from farm land.
