Saving and Healing Lives by Increasing Kidney Utilization A National Improvement Initiative Sponsored by The Alliance Partial funding from the ASAE Foundation, Innovation Grant

Background Alliance Leadership & Innovation Council meeting held in Seattle in August 2015 Shark Tank Competition – Ideas for increasing transplantation Proposal to study OPOs with high observed to expected kidneys transplanted per donor for sustained period of time High performing OPOs were selected based on review of SRTR data from 2012 - 2015

Goal and Objectives Goal: Objectives: To save and heal more lives by increasing utilization of the kidneys available for transplant Objectives: Identify nationally collected data points to determine an appropriate measure of kidney utilization and wastage Identify replicable strategies to minimize kidney wastage from high performing OPOs Create a national and collaborative initiative to adopt the recommended strategies for a pilot phase Measure the impact on the number of kidneys transplanted and wasted

Team Project Co-Directors Survey and Data Coordinator Alliance Staff Robert Harland MD Kevin O’Connor Survey and Data Coordinator Dominic Adorno Alliance Staff LeAnn Swanson Hedi Aguiar Additional Kidney Utilization Project workgroup members Lynn Onken, Wade Liu, Sharon Stover, Chris Jaynes, John Magee MD

Design Phase One (completed) Phase Two Phase Three SRTR data analysis Four high performing OPOS identified Questionnaire and site visits conducted Phase Two Enlist OPOs to participate for 1 year in Pilot Project – to implement one or more new strategies (tentative start date August 1) Phase Three Data analysis and review of kidney utilization at participating centers Report findings to OPO community (AOPO Meeting 2017)
