Presentation transcript:

Determine whether each situation calls for a survey, an experiment, or an observational study. Explain your reasoning. You want to find opinions on the best computer game to buy. You want to see if students who have a 4.0 grade point average study more than those who do not. You want to compare the health of students who walk to school to the health of students who ride the bus. You want to find out if people who eat a candy bar immediately before a math test get higher scores than people who do not. Problem of the Day

Section 11-2 Distributions of Data

Use the shapes of distributions to select appropriate statistics. Use the shapes of distributions to compare data. Objectives

Common Core State Standards Content Standards S.IC.1 – Understand statistics as a process for making inferences about population parameters based on a random sample from that population. Mathematical Practices 1) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Common Core State Standards

Box and Whisker Plot

*If the distribution is relatively symmetric, the mean and standard deviation can be used. *If the distribution is skewed or has outliers, use the five-number summary to describe the center and spread of the data.

A barber keeps track of the total number of customers he has each day for a sample of days. Use a graphing calculator to create a box-and- whisker plot. Then describe the shape of the distribution. Describe the center and spread of the data using either the mean and standard deviation or the five-number summary. Example 2 Number of Customers 16, 18, 22, 10, 24, 13, 14, 22, 16, 20, 11, 20, 18, 10, 19, 12, 14, 20, 11, 8

The medal counts for the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics are shown. Use a graphing calculator to create a box-and- whisker plot for each set of data. Then describe the shape of each distribution. Describe the center and spread of each data using either the mean and standard deviation or the five-number summary. Example 2 2002 37, 3, 5, 2, 30, 11, 5, 1, 9, 14, 26, 11, 6, 3, 15, 1, 3, 11, 3, 23, 5, 8, 16, 3, 6, 1 2010 3, 8, 1, 25, 2, 34, 2, 3, 11, 13, 7, 17, 11, 4, 2, 8, 3, 13, 17, 7, 4, 36, 2, 1

Below is a box-and-whisker plot for the average final exams scores from last year’s Algebra 2 classes. What was the median score? Problem of the Day
