TIP OF THE DAY 5 people must tell me a tip that they remember and use.

SWBAT: Explain symbolism in the text

Wall Questions: Go around with your partner to each of the wall questions and answer the questions. Try not to peek at the answers unless you have NO idea. You may go to the questions in any order– go to a wall question that doesn’t have any people around it. After, I will call on random people to tell me the most thoughtful question they read.

Review HW: Is Gatsby happy that Tom asks about causing a row in his house? How does Daisy feel about telling Tom that she might be leaving him? What begins to turn the tables on Gatsby? What makes Daisy start to turn away from him? Who “won” the conversation? Gatsby or Tom? How do you know? What happened to Myrtle? Why?

Symbolism: What is a symbol? An object that represents a larger idea

What it might represent Any text to back this up? (List p. #s) With your partner, determine the potential meaning of different symbols that come up in the book and then create at least two or three of your own: Symbol: What it might represent Any text to back this up? (List p. #s) Dr. Eckleburg’s eyes The eyes of God/always watching p. 159-160 The green light The weather ? (you come up with one) ? (come up with another one…)

Gatsby: p. 137

HW: Read to p. 145 Write two important points we learn in these pages. Continue to work on journals (4 due next Tuesday) EXIT: Two options: 1) Tell me one symbol and what it represented that was not given to you by Ms. Stitt OR 2) Tell me one excellent wall question you read today.
