Cornell Notes (continued) What type of chemical reaction? Double Replacement Switch Cations Find Charges Flip & Drop  for Precipitate? Na3PO4 + BaCl2  Ba+2 PO4-3 + Na+1 Cl-1 Barium phosphate is not soluble so a precipitate forms Ba3(PO4)2 (s) + NaCl(aq)

Precipitates in Double Replacement Reactions Many DR reactions occur in water- that is, in aqueous solution When dissolved in water, many ionic compounds “dissociate”, or separate, into cations and anions If the rearrangement of the ions forms a solid it is called a precipitate. A precipitate is a solid produced during a chemical reaction in a solution.

Example AgNO3 + NaCl  AgCl + NaNO3 1. First, we separate the compounds into ions: Ag1+ + NO31- + Na1+ + Cl1-  2. Next we “switch” the cations 3. Last we determine if a precipitate will form using the solubility chart AgCl + Na1+ + NO31- Note that the AgCl did not ionize, because it is a “precipitate”
