Abstract: What do a fifteenth century Scottish laird, a pre-World War II Polish mathematician, and a young South African physicist moonlighting at Groote Shuur Hospital in the 1950’s have in common? How did their efforts converge to produce a medical miracle, earn a Nobel prize, and spawn a multi-billion dollar industry? And what could all this have to do with the geometry of million-dimensional space? This expository talk, suitable for undergraduate ears, attempts to shed some light on these questions and others that arise in the science of medical imaging. Intended audience: Undergraduate students and their teachers Useful background: A nodding acquaintance with vectors Biography: Dr. Chuck Groetsch is Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics at The Citadel and holds the Traubert Chair in Science and Mathematics. His primary educational interest is the integration of mathematics, history and physical science in the classroom. He is the author of several books, two of which have been published in Japanese translations and one in a Chinese translation. Chuck is Editor of the Journal of Integral Equations and Applications and serves on the editorial boards of a half-dozen research journals. He is a former Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Interim Dean of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Cincinnati and he has held various visiting appointments in the U.S., Europe and Australia.
