“Golfing great Arnold Palmer dead at 87”

Arnold Palmer, known as "the King" for his transformative legacy in golf, has died at the age of 87. He died Sunday evening at a Pittsburgh hospital while awaiting cardiac surgery. With his dominance in golf and distinctive style, Palmer helped turn the sport from a country club pursuit to one that became accessible to the masses. He won more than 90 golf tournaments, including the Masters four times, the U.S. Open in 1960, and the British Open in 1961 and 1962. "I would like to be remembered for bringing golf to a worldwide audience," he told CNN in 2012. He and his two great rivals in the "Big Three" -- Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus -- helped take the sport around the globe in the 1960s, capitalizing on the ever-growing reach of television. Golf grew into made-for-television events and with it came massive sponsorship and prize money. “No one has had a greater impact on those who play our great sport or who are touched by it.” Palmer is survived by his second wife, Kit, his two daughters, six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Washington D.C. (White House) - On Friday President Barack Obama has plans to veto legislation permitting the families of 9/11 victims to sue the Saudi Arabia government. The move sets up a clash between some of the most powerful forces in Washington, and could lead to the first veto override of Obama's presidency. The bill would end foreign countries' immunity in the United States from lawsuits, allowing federal civil suits to go forward. Support for the "Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act" ran high among lawmakers, who overwhelmingly passed the bill earlier this year. Obama has vowed to reject the bill, claiming it could open US diplomats and service members to lawsuits in any country. "If this bill were pass, the United States government, US service members, US diplomats, and even, potentially, US companies are at risk of being hauled into court in countries all around the world," Earnest said. The White House has until midnight Friday to officially submit the veto to Congress. The White House is hoping to keep its options open by waiting until nearer the deadline.

In Other News The lone suspect held in the killing of five people at a Washington state mall will be arraigned Monday and authorities are working steadily to nail down a motive, a state patrol spokesman said Sunday. Arcan Cetin, 20, is facing five counts of first-degree murder, according to Skagit County jail records. He will appear Monday in the county's district court. Four women and one man died in the shooting Friday night at a Macy's store at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, north of Seattle. The victims' identities have not been released. Cetin was taken into custody Saturday night after a nearly 24-hour manhunt, authorities said. Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández, who defected from Cuba at 15 and went on to become one of baseball's brightest stars, was killed early Sunday in a boating accident. Fernández, who was 24, and two other men were found dead after their boat was discovered at the entrance of Miami Harbor. Coast Guard personnel on patrol noticed the vessel upside down on the north end of a rocky jetty shortly after 3:15 a.m.. Divers recovered two bodies under the boat, and a third victim was found on the rocks.
