“School’s now is not like when I was at school” The start of a new school year brings out the same conversations and feelings Introduction Explain how we will be helping your child to achieve in their remaining time at Kingsmead Explain what we mean by ‘flip learning’ Explain how we will be helping your child Show you methods to help with ‘revision’ Explain how we are helping with homework “School’s now is not like when I was at school” We can’t do a great deal about the first three – sorry! We can help with the bottom two That sinking feeling when you are asked to help with homework

Flip Learning What is it…? It’s called flip learning because learning starts before the lesson at home. Homework is about basic knowledge gathering. The lesson now becomes focused on applying the information and practicing analysing information based on knowledge. The lesson becomes about challenging each student to consider and re-consider their ‘understanding.’ Need something to write with – maybe a pen would do We all know that a little prior learning really helps. It lets us accelerate the learning process. Or does it? <Audience participation>

Flip Learning explained Saturday, December 08, 2018 Flip Learning explained Why Learning now can split and mean that everyone is challenged. Those who have the core concept secure can extend and test what they know. Those who haven’t can be supported and re-examine the concepts. Small quizzes can help students see how much they are learning – helps build confidence!

Flip learning benefits What Benefits Spend more time on skills – students get to practice using their skills Students see the benefit of planning and reading ahead EEF have shown that this is the best form of homework to support learning
