CONCEPT GENERATION chapter FIVE DR. ROSMAINI TASMIN apr. 2015

Concept development phase PRODUCT CONCEPT IS APPROXIMATION OF TECHNOLOGY, WORKING PRINCIPLE TO FORM OF PRODUCT. CONCEPTUAL SKETCH IS A THREE DIMENSIONAL MODEL, WITH BRIEF TEXTUAL DESCRIPTION SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT DEPENDS ON THE QUALITY OF UNDERLYING CONCEPT

COMMON CAUSES OF FAILURE IN PRODUCT CONCEPT ONLY ONE OR TWO ALTERNATIVES, PROPOSED BY MOST ASSERTIVE MEMBER. INVOLVEMENT OF ONLY ONE OR TWO PEOPLE IN THE PROCESS INEFFECTIVE INTEGRATION OF POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS FAILURE TO CONSIDER ENTIRE CATEGORIES OF SOLUTIONS

FIVE-STEP CONCEPT GENERATION METHOD

STEP 1 – CLARIFY THE PROBLEM Clarify the problem consists of developing a general understanding and then breaking the problem down into sub problems if necessary TO DESIGN A BETTER HANDHELD ROOFING NAILER DECOMPOSE A COMPLEX PROBLEM INTO SIMPLER SUBPROBLEMS Many design challenges are too complex to solve as a single problem and can be usefully divided into several simpler sub problems. In some cases, the design problem cannot readily be divided into sub problems.

FUNCTIONAL DECOMPOSITION BLACK BOX 3 – 10 SUBFUNCTIONS

Step 2: search externally Aimed at finding existing solutions to both the overall problem and the sub problem clarification step. External search for solutions is essentially an information-gathering process. INTERVIEW LEAD USERS Building contractors, house builders CONSULT EXPERTS (technical rep., product engineer) SEARCH PATENTS (www.uspto.gov/patents) SEARCH PUBLISHED LITERATURE BENCHMARK RELATED PRODUCTS

STEP 3: SEARCH INTERNALLY Internal search is the use of personal and team knowledge and creativity to generate solution concepts. Called BRAINSTORMING, this type of search is INTERNALLY in that all of the ideas to emerge from this step are created from knowledge already in the possession of the team. 4 guidelines are useful for improving both individual and group internal search: Suspend judgment Generate a lot of ideas Welcome ideas that may seem infeasible Use graphical and physical media

Tips for generating solution concepts MAKE ANALOGIES WHAT OTHER DEVICES WOULD DO THE SAME TASKS WISH AND WONDER I WONDER… I WISH… USE RELATED STIMULI USE OTHER’S IDEAS TO GENERATE FURTHER IDEAS USE UNRELATED STIMULI SET QUANTITATIVE GOALS USE GALLERY METHOD

STEP 4: EXPLORE SYSTEMATICALLY 3 SUBPROBLEMS SLIDE 6 SOLUTIONS TO SUBPROBLEM OF ENERGY TO NAIL

EXPLORE SYSTEMATICALLY CATEGORIZE THE SOLUTIONS OF SUBPROBLEM
