5-2=3 Star Students Calendar Math 1/29-2/2 Birthdays No Birthdays this Literacy Our book of the week is “What is Black and White and Moos” and the sight words are “get & look”. Moving forward, we will continue to have two new sight words each week. Please have your child practice reading and writing them at home as well. In Reading Workshop, we will continue our Nonfiction Unit of Study. Students will look at text features that we often find in Nonfiction books. They will work with a partner to find and mark with a post-it note: table of contents, photographs, captions, maps, glossary, and index. Students will learn the final reading strategy: “Tryin’ Lion”. This reminds students that when they come to a word they don’t know they should just keep trying their reading strategies until they find one that works. In Writing Workshop, students will take their How-To writing from last week and make it into a book. We will do a shared writing where the students will help me write a How-To book. This allows students to see me model my thinking out loud, and the criteria they need for to be successful. Math This week students will begin Module 8: Subtraction. They will learn that subtraction means taking things apart and what that sounds like in a subtraction story. Students will also practice writing equations that represent a subtraction situation. They will be crossing objects out and covering up a part of a group to show taking a group apart.
