New York Area that is now New York City was previously controlled by the Netherlands 1665: the English seize New Netherland from the Dutch and name it New York New York becomes a center of commerce and an important military post Settlers in New York want the same liberties of English people in England  Charter of Liberties and Privileges

Story Time (15 minutes) Imagine that you are coming over to the New World from England. We have learned about several different colonies today. Pick the colony that you would like to live in and explain why you have picked this colony. You may also choose to live in the Jamestown Colony or Maryland. In one of your paragraphs, explain why this colony is a better place to live than one other colony. Things to Consider: How do people in this colony make money? How do people in this colony interact with Native Americans? Why is this colony better than the other colonies?
