The Tide Turns The war again began to go badly for the north. The problem was poor leadership. When McClellan fails to pursue lee ‘s beaten army, Lincoln replaced him with general Ambrose Burnside. http://www.old-picture.com/civil-war/pictures/Burnside-Ambrose-Burnside.jpg

Confederate Victories http://mrkash.com/activities/images/leeconfederate.jpg In December 1862, McLellan marched his army of 120,000 men directly toward Richmond. Lee massed 75,000 men at Fredericksburg, Virginia, to block their path. The union suffered nearly 13,000 casualties in the Battle of Fredericksburg and the confederate nearly 5,000 In may 1863 hooker’s army was smashed at the Battle of Chancellorsville by a force that was half its size.

The Battle Of Gettysburg In June 1863, Lees troops crossed Maryland and marched into Pennsylvania. In July 1, some confederate soldiers approached the quiet town of Gettysburg. On the afternoon of July 3, Lee ordered an all-out attack on center of the union line . About 5,500 confederates were killed or wounded in what is know as Pickett’s Charge.

The fall of Vicksburg In July 4, of 1863 as Lees shattered army began its retreat from Gettysburg, the south suffered another major blow far to the south and west After 6 weeks 30,000 confederate troops at Vicksburg finally gave up. July 1863 was the major turning point of the civil war.

The Gettysburg Address In November 1863, about 15,000 people gathered on the battle field at Gettysburg to honor the soldiers who died. http://s3.amazonaws.com/production.mediajoint.prx.org/public/piece_images/232642/Gettysburg_General_Armistead_Picketts_Charge_small.jpg

Grant vs. Lee After 7 weeks of fighting, Grant had lost about 55,000 men and the confederates had lost about 35,000. In June 1864, Grant became siege, the tactic he had used at Vicksburg. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Gx1r9oyeZd0/TFMbBk0QSnI/AAAAAAAAAXE/6hfnaHmeVpQ/s1600/Grant+and+Lee.jpg

March To The Sea The union army marched into Atlantic on September 2nd, 1864 In the months before the capture of Atlanta, many northerners had grown tired of the war In November, Sherman ordered Atlanta burned Along the way, union troops set fire to buildings seized crops in live stock, and pulled up railroad tracks

Surrender At Appomattox On April 2nd, grants troops finally broke through confederate line By evening, Richmond was in union hands lee’s army retreated to the town of Appomattox courthouse. There on April 9th 1865 his escape cut off, lee surrendered. http://www.civilwar.org/photos/galleries/appomattox-court-house/images/last-salute.jpg

The Wars Terrible Toll The civil war was the bloodiest conflict the U.S. has ever fought. About 260,000 confederate soldiers gave their lives in the war Nearly a half million people were wounded. The number of union died exceeded 36o,000, including 37,000 African Americans. http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/77/a1/a0/77a1a00740e4140317202a32b1311612.jpg
