Reviewing the Literature A) General information about literature review A literature review in a thesis is a critical review of literature relevant to your field of study. It is not a summary of the whole field, or a recounting of everything you have read in the field but an organized and critical discussion that lets your reader(s) see what you have made of the literature relevant to the topic of your thesis and your research question. It functions to contextualize your research within that research field by identifying where there are gaps in previous research that your own research will help to fill. It shows how previous research both informs and provides a rationale for the suggested research, (see the annotated discipline examples.)

Reviewing the Literature So, producing a literature review product that is an organized and critical discussion of the literature and that does lead towards a rationale for your thesis is often a reflection a sound reviewing process. During the process of reviewing the literature, it is helpful to continually categorize the research literature you are reading. You might organize your note taking via the conceptual, methodological, theoretical or philosophical differences or similarities you find in the literature as well as via any chronological organization that is more immediately apparent. To help you clarify these concepts/similarities/differences in the field, you might also develop a map or a schema that represents those ideas: A schema can then be used to help you develop a clear, critical organization when it comes to writing literature review.

Reviewing the Literature Before you begin writing, you might ask the following questions to ensure what material should be in the literature review so that it is focussed on appropriate prior research. B) What should be included in a Literature review What is the specific thesis or research question my literature review helps to define? What type of literature review am I conducting and presenting? Am I looking at issue of theory, methodology, policy, qualitative research, or quantitative research (e.g. On the effectiveness or methods or procedure)? What is the scope of my review? How can I ensure that I use all and only the relevant material in my written literature review? Have I critically evaluated the literature in such a way that I understand the controversies in the field and the methodology/theoretical flaws that exist in previous research and see the gaps that my research can fill?

Reviewing the Literature Therefore, when you begin writing, your evaluation of the literature should be clearly visible in the way you organize the information and in the way you present or discuss information. The organization of the information via the conceptual, methodological, theoretical or philosophical differences or similarities in the literature that you noted during the reviewing of the literature can made clearly visible by presenting those concepts in paragraph beginnings, making them obvious to the reader(s). (Notice the organizational signposting in the Biology example where previous research is grouped according to studies differentiated by methodology.) In making decisions about organization, you will sometimes need to choose a focus on what has been found out in previous research(in which case you focus on concepts and background the researchers) or on who has carried out previous research(in which case you foreground the researchers) but always make sure have a sound rationale for focusing on one rather the other.

Reviewing the Literature C) Flaws in literature review Literature review are sometimes mistakenly written up as just summaries of previous research instead of critical pieces of writing that contextualize or provide background to a new piece of research. Example In the past, much has been discovered in the field of coastal erosion and the beach profile that result from such erosion. Numerous laboratory experiments and field observations have been conducted to identify the mechanics and impact of coastal erosion.…(1) The research isn’t reviewed here; It’s simply reported (1)

Reviewing the Literature Jachowski (1964) developed a model investigation conducted on the used of interlocking precast concrete block in seawalls. After a survey of damage caused by severe storms on the coast of the USA, a new and specially shaped concrete block was developed for use in shore protection. This block was designed for used in a revetment type seawall that would reduce wave run-up and overtopping, and scour at the base or toe of the wall and be both durable and economical. It proved that effective shore protection could be achieved utilizing these units. (2) Notice that the paragraph focuses on who did the research instead of more appropriate on what had been done or found (2)

Reviewing the Literature Selezov and Zheleznyak (1965) conducted experiments on the scouring of sea bottom in front of harbor seawalls, via a theoretical investigation of solitary wave interaction with a vertical wall using a Boussinesques type equation. It showed that the numerical result were in reasonable agreement with laboratory experimental data. (3) Structured using only chronology as an organizing principles, this review is asking the reader to determine how these studies might be related in terms of methodology or some other factors. (3)

Reviewing the Literature D) Where does the literature review occur? Literature review can be found in different position within a thesis depending on the type of research being reported and the discipline it is situated in. They can be embedded into introduction chapters or can exist as a totally separated chapter. They can also be embedded in to a number of chapters when each chapter is dealing with a new sub-topic that requires its own review of relevant literature. The decision about where the literature review is to be placed should be guided what is acceptable or common in theses in your discipline and by the requirements of your particular research.

Reviewing the Literature (example) Example from Biology [1]Although studies have shown that diet has an important influence on a mammal’s overall biology (e.g. McNab 1983), little is known about the feeding ecology of many Australian species. [2]One species, the yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis), which weighs up to approximately 700g, is the largest of the arthropod and exudate-feeding marsupial gliders (see Smith & Lee 1984). [3]It has a widespread but patchy distribution in eastern Australia and is characterized by low population densities (Henry & Craig 1984, Kavanagh 1984). [4]Relatively little research has been centered on the feeding behavior of this species because of difficulty in its detection and capture (Craig & Belcher 1980). Main point about previous research in this area. (3,4)

Reviewing the Literature [5]One study (Wakefield, 1970) concluded that while yellow-bellied gliders obtain sap from the ‘V’-shaped incisions they make in the trunks of various species of eucalypt, arthropods comprise the bulk of their diet. [6]This conclusion, however, was based on limited feeding observations and the irregular occurrence of these ‘sap-site’ trees. (Being critical to the point of limitedness) Findings of one study using limited observations. (6)

Reviewing the Literature [7]Other studies conducted analyses on fecal samples from north Queensland and Victoria respectively (Smith and Russell, 1982; Henry and Craig, 1984; Craig, 1985) to determine feeding behavior). [8]These studies found the presence of arthropods, eucalypt sap, nectar and honeydew; however, as insect and plant exudates are almost totally digested and leave little trace in the feces other indicators must be used to infer their use (Smith & Russell 1982). [9]Bark, for example, is used as an indicator of eucalypt sap. [10]Fecal analysis, therefore, does not allow a precise determination of the relative importance of each of the separate dietary items. Reviewing the Literature [11]Studies using qualitative observations of feeding behavior in gliders have also been carried out (Henry and Craig, 1984; Craig, 1985; Kavanagh and Rohan-Jones, 1982; and Kavanagh, 1987a,b). [12]In these studies each observation is scored equal, regardless of duration, thus these data indicate only the presence or absence of food items in the diet, not their relative use. [13]A study employing the use of timed (i.e. quantitative) feeding observations is necessary to give a better resolution of the species’ dietary requirements. [14]This study was aimed at achieving this by addressing the following question: are different food resources exploited in different proportions throughout the year? (being critical to the point of qualitativeness) (END) Other studies assessed presence of food items in the diet, not the differential proportions of each food item in the diet (10) Identification of the gap. (12,13) Aims of this research shows how this research will fill the gap. (14)
