Our Mission Our mission is to construct a community of learners through communication, collaboration, creative problem solving and productive struggle. We respect the unique strengths of all students and value what they bring to our learning community. Fifth grade will be a bright and positive place to grow! Our Goals Developing relationships; team building Increasing the amount of time spent reading at the student’s reading level. Developing students who have number sense, who will stick with problems until they find an answer, and are able to justify their thinking. Building critical thinking skills with a growth mind set. Encouraging students to take initiative as they see opportunities for service learning and self-sufficiency. Willingness to take risks and using mistakes as learning opportunities.

Students will work as they eat, so please make sure the snack is not messy. Examples of these types of snack include: fruit, granola, pretzels, cheese, and crackers.

Attendance/Drop-Off/Pick-Up The tardy bell rings at 8:00am. If a student is arriving after this time, they must be signed in by a parent or guardian, with Ms. Lopez. If a student is going to eat breakfast at school, he/she needs to arrive no later than 7:50am. This year, the official attendance time is 9:05am. Students need to be here by this established time to be counted present for the day. If your child is absent, send an absence note, on the student’s return. If you forget, we will send home a form as a reminder. 2:45 is the latest that students can be picked up early. After that time, the student will be dismissed during the regularly scheduled time. Be sure to bring ID when coming to the school.

Rotation Schedule This year our fifth grade classes have been divided into color groups. Students will know their color groups and will wear appropriate shoes for PE. We have Specials from 8:05am- 9:00am. Please make a note of your child’s color group. They will get into the routine pretty quickly, but may need reminders, to start the year. For the first day, make sure your child is prepared for P.E., by wearing appropriate footwear. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday PE Red Orange Blue Green Purple MUSIC TECH ART/LIBRARY

SOAR Folder SOAR Folder Our school’s positive behavior incentive system includes using a SOAR Folder. This communication tool allows parents to see rewards, progress, as well as areas of concern. This folder also holds Rapid Rewards sheets, containing all of your child’s earnings. Please review the Acknowledgements, Praise, and Rewards page. Every Thursday, parents are to review and initial the SOAR Folder. The top part of the daily square is citizenship and the bottom part reflects study skills. Citizenship Work Habits

Agenda Usage Fifth graders are expected to organize each day, week, and month using an agenda. Agendas are on sale for $4, during both Falcon Fest and the first week of school. On Monday of each week, students are responsible for recording what is due, important events, and not limited to routinely scheduled tasks (i.e., SOAR Signature). If your child already has an agenda for the school year, please send it with them on the first day.

Homework/Daily Maintenance All homework assignments require parent signatures. RELA/Social Studies- Read 4 nights per week for 25 minutes each night (Requirements gradually build to meet goal) RELA-Instead of a traditional reading log, we will implement Reading Projects, with weekly check-ins, for accountability. Math- Daily Rigor is to be completed and students will be ready to discuss the next day Science- Homework is distributed on Monday and is due on Friday
