HALLOWEEN Origins and History

Where do you celebrate Halloween? When is Halloween? It’s on the thirty-first of October. Where do you celebrate Halloween? You celebrate Halloween in the USA, in Great Britain and in many English- speaking countries.

Origins What did the Celts celebrate on that day? They celebrated the end of the year. It was the start of winter. What did the Celts believe? They believed that ghosts, witches and evil spirits returned on that night. What did the Celts do to send them away? They wore frightening costumes and… made big fires!

Colours What were the 2 colours of Halloween ? Black and orange! What did the 2 colours represent for the Celts? Black represented winter and long nights. Orange represented the harvest. What did the Druids believe about black cats? They believed that black cats had special powers. So they have become a symbol for Halloween.

Name What did the Catholic church decide in the 8th century? The Church decided to call the 1st of November « All Saints’ day » or « All Hallows’ day ». So what about the 31st of October? The 31st of October was « All Hallows’ eve ». It became « Halloween ». = La veille
