What is Geography? Write and idea in the back of your Humanities book. (not your English book)

Task 1: Look at the picture cards in front of you. In your table groups sort them in to categories. You can sort them anyway you want to!

What is Geography? Geography is the study of the characteristics of the places that make up our world. Geography is concerned with the processes that shape the earth’s surface and the ways in which people interact with environments. It seeks to explain the character of places and the distribution (spread) of people, features and events on or near the earth’s surface. (Pearson Geography, 2014)

Areas of Geography There are 2 main areas of Geography: Human Geography and Physical Geography

Human Geography looks at things that only exist because humans do. For example: The study of land use (cities, farms, factories) The amount of people in a particular place Economic (money) changes Global terrorism, human rights, child labour, global inequality and social justice

Physical Geography Physical Geography looks at the things that would exist even if humans didn’t. For example: The growth of forests and the animals that live there The movement of oceans (tides, waves) The changes in weather patterns (temperature and rainfall) Natural hazards (volcanoes, earthquakes, tidal waves)

Sort your cards! Sort your cards in to 2 columns 1 column for Human Geography 1 column for Physical Geography

Environmental Geography Sometimes Geographers refer to a third area of Geography called Environmental Geography. Environmental Geography looks at the relationship between humans and the natural environment and how they affect change upon each other. For example: The causes and effects of pollution on people and the environment. The causes and effects of climate change. The study of when natural hazards become disasters.

Sort your cards! Now sort your cards in to 3 columns 1 column for Human Geography 1 column for Physical Geography and 1 column for Environmental Geography
