DISCUSSION Why was 1949 a turning point within the Cold War? What key developments occurred? How does Stalin respond to the US dropping of the atomic bomb? How does this response lead to the testing of his own atomic weapon? Summarize the June 1947 report to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. How did the Soviet creation of their atomic bomb impact the development of the Cold War? THINKER: Review the historian arguments about who is most responsible for the outbreak of war (pgs. 49-50). Which view do you agree with most? Why?
