Learning Objectives Today Poetry 4 Date: Acrostic Poetry Learning Objectives Today To examine a super cool type of poetry used by spies, known as Acrostic poetry. To do some fun tasks involving your first name and random words that you like. By the end of this class, you shall be able to create an Acrostic poem and know a lot more adjectives.

Write down as many complimentary words as possible (stop at 20 ) For example: Happy, fun, flexible.

Notes Acrostic poem: A poem in which certain letters in each line form a word or words. (Spies use this.) Mnemonic (silent m, ne-mon-ic): a system to help remember something. Adjective: A describing word. It is a word that gives information or changes a person or thing in a sentence. (‘the’ is one ) Theme: The subject, idea or central focus of a thing.

To create an acrostic poem You need a word or words to use as a title. For example - your first name, Jack, John, Jill. You need to write down each letter on a new line. You need to think of a word or sentence that captures the essence of the title for each line.

So, to make sure you have the concept, what are the titles of these poems? Tan Athletic Resourceful Zooms Assertive Nimble Joyful Amazing Neat Exact

Exercise One Your first name or a nickname, however many letters it is. One or two words per letter. We will help find nice complimentary words. Things that help here. A dictionary or goggle.

Exercise Two A word. I used ‘hello’ so not that word please. It cannot start with the same letter as the name you used before. You can use your favourite word, a word in your copy or that you heard today in another class.

Homework S K I Study notes. P A L N E Study notes. Write a small secret message using acrostic poetry with small sentences on every line. (Hints: actions and emotions are good starters. People shall hear this too.) Remember to leave a space between words because their is no such word as skipaline. Also, they’re like stanzas.

Part 2

Learning Objectives Today Poetry 5 Date: Acrostic Poetry 2 Learning Objectives Today We shall emphasise the ‘feelings’ aspect of poetry today. We’ll practise Acrostic poems in pairs and then in groups, increasing our team experience.

Let’s read those secret messages.

Exercise One – Express a feeling In my life, I’ve had about five . . . . . . . . . . . DOGS What naughty chewing little beasts they . . . Exercise One – Express a feeling First, decode the message in the poem and write it into your exercise copy. Second, in pairs choose things you both know or like and make up your own poem in this manner. (you may not choose the same message as the poem.) Hints: keep the hidden sentence to 5/6 words.

Exercise two –the double acrostic In groups of 4, complete the following tasks: Choose two words that are somehow linked. Create a double acrostic poem with one of those words at each end. While writing, note down what actions could be done while reading this poem. It is your choice whether to work simultaneously or to divide it up into sections and split the work.

Homework We’ve done acrostic and simple 4 line rhyme now. For homework, complete the following task: Create an acrostic 4 line rhyming scheme poem. Three stanzas long minimum. All words will have to be 4 letters long. You can list things for your acrostic element: ribs, tuna, cake– call it ‘I’m hungry’.
