Unit 1: Bond Formation, Breaking & Energy Wednesday 2-10-2010 Unit 1: Bond Formation, Breaking & Energy

(1) Energy Energy = Ability to do work. Types: Kinetic Potential (Chemical)

(2) High Energy Bonds Biomolecules: ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate): Covalent bonds Chemical Potential ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate): Phosphate bonds Add Phosphate  Store Remove Phosphate  Release

(3) Bond Formation Combine unstable atoms  molecule. Endothermic: Takes energy. Overcome nuclear charges. Push Atoms Together = WORK

(4) Bond Breaking Separate atoms w/in molecule. Exothermic: Releases energy. Energy stored in bond Now useable

(5) Hydrolysis Hydrolysis = Adding Water Splits Molecule into smaller units

(6) Dehydration Dehydration = Removing Water Combines smaller units  Larger Molecule
